Context:

We're an ambitious startup, six years in the making, working on some really exciting stuff. It is not a sure bet just yet, but we have some great momentum and opportunities that lie ahead. One of our challenges is that the demand for our products is outpacing our team's capacity, and that's why we'd like to hire you. We're all wearing multiple hats and it's time that we find someone who will be our team's lead electrical engineer. Tech development is not consistent, and when one of our hardware engineers needs to focus on a chassis redesign it takes their time away from upgrading our PCB boards for the new batteries we want to test, and that's not good for anyone.

Role:

We're looking for someone to be our teammate, that we can trust in building and coordinating all things relating to the electrical systems of our robotics and autonomous vehicle platforms. Everything from wiring new batteries, to designing and building custom PCBs, to modifying firmware for our power management, to motivating and instructing others on how to do the same. Together we will navigate the ebbs and flows of development, seizing opportunities and mitigating risks as we strive to grow the company. We are also looking for someone who, when the team is feeling stressed, is able to stay calm, and for this reason we would like to compensate you well. It’s going to be an exciting journey and you will be at our side along the way.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and build highly reliable electrical power supply systems and embedded systems
  • Develop and carry out testing activities of our robotic platforms, both in our lab and in on-site trials
  • Lead electrical project planning and scheduling, to motivate the team and keep them on track for targets
  • Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of software and hardware engineers, through sketches, block diagrams, flow charts, and technical writing
  • Communicate effectively with the team, knowing when in-person meetings are more appropriate then written feedback/reviews, and vice versa
  • Balance a "get it done" attitude with the need to maintain clear and accurate documentation of developments and experiments, so as to prioritize speed while simultaneously enabling scalability
  • Inspire and lead by example, with professionalism, kindness, and openness that encourages dreaming big, being creative, and having fun
  • Efficiently work with suppliers to source and spec parts, balancing our need for speed with our need reliability
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all details, plans, strategies and communications relating to our technical, trade secret and business information
  • Able to occasionally travel domestically and internationally, including to the US

Requirements:

  • 3+ years experience with PCB design, testing and prototyping, including an excellent grasp of electronic components, soldering and circuit design
  • Have used Kicad or Altium software in a professional capacity
  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming language and firmware programming in general
  • Proficiency with troubleshooting wiring and circuit boards
  • Knowledge of, and preferably experience with, automotive or >=24V DC electrical systems and wiring harnesses
  • Hands on experience in electrical and mechanical prototyping
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and documentation skills
  • Excellent understanding of the development process from specification and prototyping to documentation and quality assurance
  • Successfully graduated with a technology diploma or technical degree
  • Able to work as part of a diverse team, while also being able to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Able to take on new opportunities and challenges, with a passion for personal development
  • Committed to continuous improvement and supporting your colleagues in their own continuous improvement
  • A sense of urgency in executing responsibilities and prioritizing most critical work
  • You are a good listener and respect others’ opinions
  • You get excited about creating new things and are not afraid of the challenges faced when building something from scratch
  • You are hard-working and a self-starter

Nice-to-haves:

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as Fusion 360 or SolidWorks
  • Experience of working with autonomous vehicles or mobile robots
  • Experience of successfully scaling up hardware product production
  • Experience using Git version control

Long Term:

Looking for someone who will do this job with exceptional focus for at least two years. Along the way, and beyond this, we expect significant opportunities to showcase and develop your skills as a leader, and we would be thrilled to organize for you to grow with the company.

Salary:

$90,000 - $140,000
